During the intro of Macklemore’s song ‘Same Love’ at Made in America festival, he says he hasn’t been always proud to be an American.

“In terms of what this festival is, in terms of this Made in America festival, it embodies this flag that we supposed, that we stand behind, that we are a part of. There’s been many times in my life where I haven’t necessarily felt proud to be an American, straight up.  It’s the truth, it’s the truth.  I believe you should always hold your government and state under scrutiny.  You shouldn’t just go along with what the masses say to do. But this year in particularly and in 2012 as well. There has been a change in the terms of equality.  I don’t know what you believe, but i believe that no government that no state that no institution that no religion, no other human being can tell you who you love in your heart is right or wrong.  It’s up to you.  I believe in tolerance, I believe in compassion, and I believe in equality.”  – Macklemore
